Link to a great free work-out video!

Hey guys! Here is the link to an awesome free exercise video, led by Jillian Michaels from the show Biggest Loser!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEpeq7IIGcY&NR=1

When this one is done, part 2 and then 3 will show up and you can just click on them. This is a great work out and you can do it right at home! In 20 minutes you can do cardio, abs and strength training. When this becomes too easy for you, there are also level 2 and 3 available on youtube.com.

All you need is a couple 1,2,or 3 pound weights, and a mat. From a chiropractic viewpoint, the way this is taught is very safe and a really great total body workout!

Have fun! Let me know what you think!

Last Chance Workout! The Final Week is On!

This is it folks! It's the last week of the competition already! Doesn't time fly when you're having FUN?? Speaking of having fun, 16 of us came out for the first ever St. George bike scavenger hunt! We had PERFECT weather as it was nice and cool and the rain even held off for us! We had three teams and each of us had to follow the map and take pictures of us at all the clues. We were all such great sports as we ventured back to our youth going down slides, sending love notes, being bookworms at the library, and showing some love for our village.

The route was 9.5 km and took about 1.5 hours. A special congrats to the Sandison family who took first place with a time of 1 hour 8 minutes, each of them winning brand new insulated bike water bottles! Well done guys!

Last Wednesday, we had an interesting discussion led by Jessie Sommer on How and Why People become addicted to food. It was amazing how many of us could relate to eating out of boredom, habit, or comfort. Thank you to Jessie for the great hand-out as well!

Last week's Biggest Losers were 1. Teena H. - 1.94%, 2. Dan S. - 1.81%, and 3. Jennifer S. - 1.60%. Way to go guys! 20.7 lbs were lost last week, bringing up the total to a shocking 417.3 lbs!! Wow!!! I am so proud of each and every one of you!

Join us tomorrow for a round table discussion on "Highs and Lows" of the competition. I would like all of you to share your story of your weight loss journey so far, tell us what was the most important thing you have learned so far, and give us one High and one Low you have experienced this past 12 weeks. Make sure to be there as we all encourage one another and grow closer as a team.

We will also be having a Recipe Exchange this week so please bring a few copies of your favourite HEALTHY recipe(s), and perhaps a sample for us to try! Everyone can take home some new ideas on some nutritious foods that are sure to aid in our weight loss journey!!

I can't believe this contest is almost over! I really enjoyed teaching it and putting it together and I hope you all enjoyed learning from it! Many people are already asking about "next year"! Perhaps we can meet again as it seemed to be a big success! You guys are all AWESOME!! Keep it up!

I can't wait to see everyone's After Picture on the final day! Make sure you are there for the Finale... you won't want to miss it as the Biggest Loser is revealed!

Don't forget that Diane from St. George Fitness can do your After measurement at the gym during the week. This way you can see how your body composition has changed, and how many inches you've lost!

How many of you are now looking forward to exercising every day?! I know I am! And my energy levels are higher, and I am eating using portion control and reading nutrition labels on EVERYTHING!

I will see you tomorrow at the firehall! Don't forget your recipes and testimonies!

Last week, I am pleased to announce that the Biggest Losers were as follows;
1. Gail S. with 2.91%, 2. Jason F. with 2.47%, and Dan S. with 1.78%. These three are a force to be reckoned with! Well done!

There were 15 weigh-ins last week, with a total weight loss of 24.2 lbs. This week proved to be a challenge for many of the contestants as they went on holidays and many gained this week. That's okay guys! There are still a few weeks left to get back on track! You are all doing AWESOME!

A special thank you to Tammy last week for teaching us I'm sure what was St. George's first ever bellydancing class! What a unique work out, especially for the abs and shoulders! While not many were brave enough to try it out, those of us who attended had a really great time!

Join us this week for a talk based on the book, "Love Hunger" which talks about what factors are involved in how people become addicted to food. This is one you won't want to miss!

See you Wednesday at the Firehall!

The Final Month has Started!

Hello everyone and welcome to the final month of the Biggest Loser St. George! It has been almost 2 weeks since the last weigh-in because of the holiday Wednesday for Canada! I hope you all had a great day celebrating Canada's birthday!

The last meeting we had a great time learning about ion detoxification through the feet. It is something you really have to see to believe! Dan S. was the biggest loser there at the meeting so he got to do a footbath, and I won the draw for the other one! Within half an hour you should have seen the water our feet were in! Yuck! The bath draws out toxins from the body using charged particles. Well... it was mildly disturbing to say the least, of what kind of junk is stuck in our bodies! I am waiting on someone to send me the pictures so I can post them on the blog for you to see.

Diane does Ion Detox at St. George Fitness 519-448-4413, and she also does private parties at your own home. Sessions are $30.00 for a half hour, or $100 for 4 sessions. Thanks to Diane for an eye opening session and some great info!

Dan shared his inspiring story with the group. He let us in on how is doing so well with his weight loss including how he eats and exercises. When Dan began the program he was taking 10-12 diabetic pills per day, and is now only taking 2! How cool is that?! Way to go Dan!

There were 20 weigh-ins last time, and 9 at the meeting. Biggest losers were as follows; 1. Alisha S. 2.45%, 2. Dan S. 2.17%, and 3. Jessie S. 2.05% Total weight lost for the week was 36.3 lbs, bringing the grand total to 371.9 lbs. Well done!

Join us the Wednesday for a great ab work-out... we are doing BELLY DANCING!! Come guys! Let's have some fun! See you at 8:30 at the firehall!

Also this week, a free tasting of the nutritional beverage that is sweeping the nation! See why people with health issues and low energy levels are experiencing tremendous results! Available at the morning and evening weigh-in.

Also, don't forget to dust off your bike and pump up your tires to get ready for the bike rally on July 18th. Meet at Sommer Chiropractic Clinic at 9 am. Bring your camera!

Weekend for Two Awaits Biggest Loser!!

Can you believe there are only 5 weigh-ins left until the Winner of Biggest Loser St. George is revealed? It has been a wonderful journey thus far, with our contestants reaching an amazing total of 335.6 pounds! "Weigh" to go! = )

This week our biggest loser was, yet again, Dan. S. who seems to be smoking us all! Dan had an incredible 2.95% loss this week, and in a close second was his wife, Gail, with 2.06% In third place this week was Jason F. with 1.52%. Well done!

So who is going to challenge these 3 for the weekend for two in Niagara-on-the-Lake?! Check out Maria's Bed and Breakfast at www.mariasbb.ca. The winner, who will be revealed at the final weigh-in on July 29th, will receive a gift certificate to Maria's B&B for 2 nights, valued at $367.00! (donated my Sommer Chiropractic Clinic) This beautiful resort will give you a well deserved weekend of relaxation and romance, nestled in the beautiful town of NOTL.

This week we enjoyed something quite different at the meeting, as Nancy taught us a beginner's Yoga class! We learned how Yoga can improve flexibilty, blood flow, cell health and stress levels, something we ALL need! Thank you so much Nancy for opening our eyes to an exercise that can teach us to relax and let go of all that tension that our fast paced society brings.

A concern I had this week is that attendance seems to be dwindling as only 19 people weighed in this week. Come on guys! You committed to a 12 week program that will help you become healthier, happier and feeling better about your body. Let's finish what we started! To all those who remain faithful week after week, congrats! If you know someone who hasn't been coming, give them a call, or even show up at their door and tell them they are going on a walk with you. Let's encourage everyone in the program and hold them accountable. Everyone needs a pick-me-up now and again.

Make sure you are there next week as two lucky winners will get a free Ion Detox Footbath with Diane as she shows us how this cool technique can actually draw three types of toxins from your body through your feet. During the footbaths Diane will be speaking on Exercise and Nutrition, telling us what types of food are best with certain kinds of work-outs. This info is crucial to know so you can supply your body with the right type of "fuel" as you get more active!

Speaking of getting more active, do you have a bicycle sitting in the garage that desperately needs to be dusted off? Join us on July 18th from 9-11 AM for a bike scavenger hunt, a fun way to get some exercise! You don't have to be a pro! Everyone can go at their own pace. Bring your family, your camera and come on out. We are starting at my office, which is at 75 Main St. S. in the building with the Medicine Shoppe and the Dentist.

See you Wednesday at the firehall!

Hello everyone and welcome to Week 6 of the Biggest Loser St. George!

Last week we had a great discussion that was a continuation of the week before where we learned about how to read nutrition labels. We talked about reading the ingredient list and what all those big words mean! We learned that lots of people have been reading the ingredients but now we all have a good sense of the following;
- MSG and what other labels it falls under (ex- chicken boullion cubes- the first 2 ingredients are SALT and MSG!! ) vs. the PC Organics broth in the box. Read the ingredients and chose for yourself!
- things to avoid in processed foods (nitrites, sulphites, sodium, etc. and how each of those affects your health) People were given 2 articles to read with the latest research on these topics.
- How to grocery shop- bring a list, don't shop when you are hungry, check nutrition labels and ingredients, and stay in the outside aisles of the store to avoid processed foods!
- Grow your own veggie garden as space allows to have fresh produce all summer long!

Thanks for a great discussion everyone! I hope you are all learning a lot of useful information!

Well done to Dan S. this week who was the biggest loser! Dan won a $10 gift certificate generously donated by our wonderful local grocery store, FOODLAND! Thank you Foodland! In 2nd place this week was Jen S. with 2.08% loss, and in 3rd, Karen H. with 1.99%. Good job!!

All 18 people who attended the meeting were entered into a draw for some other cool prizes from our very own local hardware store and two lucky winners received some cool, unique fridge magnets and a pen! Thank you very much to Jay from St. George Hardware!

31 people weighed in last week, bringing our one month total to 270 pounds! Well done!!

Join us this week for an exercise ball class with Diane! Morning class is at 10:45 at St. George Fitness Club and the evening class is at the firehall at 8:30 pm. Make sure you know which one you signed up for and bring your own ball if you have one!

New to the schedule is Ion Detox Footbath with Diane on June 24th. The Biggest Loser that week who attends the meeting will receive a free footbath as a demo for the class! (A $30.00 value!)

And get your calendar out to mark down the Bike Scavenger Hunt for Saturday, July 4th from 9-11 am. Meet at Sommer Chiropractic Clinic and get in teams of 4. Bring your families and your digital camera to take pictures of your team at all the clues! Prizes for the winners! Lets get out and get active!!

If anyone has any other prizes to donate, please call our office at 519-448-1313 or talk to me directly and I would be happy to promote your business at the meeting! Thanks!

Still Going Strong

The fourth weigh-in took place last night at the firehall and the weight loss is still going strong! This week, there were 34 weigh-ins and the total pounds lost was 50 lbs! This brings up the total to 215 lbs! Well done guys! We had a great meeting about learning how to read nutrition labels and using them to decide which types of food are worthwhile to eat. We had some great discussion around the table and everyone participated in a practice exercise. Many were shocked by how the serving size made such a difference in total calories, fat and sodium! I also showed the group a bag with 12 teaspoons of sugar in it... the amount in a can of Pepsi! (42 grams)

We also discussed what types of fat to watch out for, and how you need to check labels to see what is actually in Non-fat products. Did you know that if something is non-fat, they have to give the product flavour some other way, and usually that is by adding more SUGAR or SALT?

Other points covered - margarine vs. butter
- how sodium increases blood pressure
- how to watch out for cereals high in sugar and salt
- how to make the most of your calories
- the red meat debate
- how much saturated fat is in 2% milk

Lots of good stuff. Please visit the website from the previous post for more practice on reading labels and some quizzes if you missed this week's meeting.

The biggest losers this week were 1. Gail S. - 2.20%, 2. Toni D. - 2.16%, and Jennifer S. - 2.04%. Way to go guys! A close race!

Next week the biggest loser who attends the meeting at 8:30 pm will receive a $5.00 gift certificate from Foodland!

See you there!

The People of St. George are Shrinking!

** Please bring in some cardboard food wrappers, cracker boxes, bread bags or anything with a nutrition label and ingredient list so you can do the learning exercise this week**

Way to go team! Another week has gone by and this week, 40 people weighed in and lost 62 pounds! Our grand total now being 165.9 pounds in just TWO WEEKS! Wow! If that isn't inspiring to you, I don't know what is! I am very proud of each and every one of you as you all seem to be very motivated and excited to get healthy and lose some weight.

This week's Biggest Losers were 1. Kristina C. (2.56%) Congrats!
2. Dan S. (2.36%)
3. Debbie B. (2.05%)
Well done everyone! Continue to stick with it as the following weeks bring more barbeques and get togethers you need to get through by making great choices with what goes on your plate.

This week 12 people attended the meeting to do "Stetching with Anne". She showed us several stretches targeting all the major muscle groups of the body. We had a great time and many of us shared one of our goals with the group. It is great to encourage one another and share some ideas for staying healthy. So let's get that number UP this week for the meeting as research shows you lose MORE WEIGHT when you attend the sessions.

Join us Wednesday for "How to Read Food Labels" with yours truly, Shauna.

** Please bring in some cardboard food wrappers, cracker boxes, bread bags or anything with a nutrition label and ingredient list so you can do the learning exercise **

An Awesome First Week!!

Hi everyone! You should all give yourself a pat on the back for a very successful first week! Here's a brief summary.
* One week one, 63 people registered for the Biggest Loser St. George.
* Week two- 36 people returned to weigh in and attend the meeting.
- total pounds lost was 103.4 pounds!! Way to go!
- This week's biggest loser was Murray A., who lost 3.62% of his original weight! Congrats! Runners up were Cindy B. (2.84%), Katie R. (2.8%) and Jason F. (2.78%) Well done guys!
- Natalie spoke on Proteins, Carbs and Fats and gave some sources of each

* Some people had concerns that they were hoping to receive a specific eating plan to follow. In response, I would like to say that the purpose of this club is to teach healthy eating habits and lifestyle changes, and NOT to diet! We all know that diets work when you are on them, and we have all tried "diets" before. But did you know that by educating yourself on how to make healthier choices about nutrition and exercise, you can all gain info that will last a lifetime!? Each week we will be teaching you this valuable information. Also, if you do want more specifics on meal plans, you can enter in your food info into Sparkpeople.com and click the mealplan section. Sparkpeople will give you daily meal plans and even grocery lists and recipes! Hope this helps!
Note* Following these plans is optional!
Tomorrow, bring any questions you have to the meeting.

We will see you tomorrow for a session on daily stretches to keep your body flexible.
Important!! Bring your exercise mat!! (or blanket if you don't have one)

See you tomorrow!

A Reminder

Well, we have just finished our first weekend in our 12 week weight loss challenge! How did you do sticking to your diet on a Saturday? I know I had some difficulties as I attended a wedding Saturday and then we had Mother's Day Sunday! This week, think about how you can make healthier choices even when tempted by chocolates, rich desserts and eating out. Share your ideas with the group on Wednesday.

This past week I received the news that my beloved grandma of 83 passed away, so I am flying to B.C. on Wednesday morning to attend the celebration of her life. But no worries! The Biggest Loser meeting will still keep on going with Natalie Hughes doing an exciting talk on Proteins, Carbs and Fats! Make sure to attend and I can't wait to see you all the following week looking all slim and trim!

Some reminders... I would like to give a special shout out to Diane from St. George Fitness who so graciously offered to do all of our body composition analyses at no cost!! If you have not yet had yours done, please drop by the gym this week Monday to Wednesday, any time up to 7:30 pm. Make sure to thank Diane for her work!
Diane has also come up with an amazing offer for Biggest Loser contestants new to her gym. She is offering a gym membership for $30.00 a month with absolutely zero membership fee during the 12 weeks of the competetition! Wow! Thanks Diane!

Okay... get all geared up for the new week as you head off to work. Make sure to pack your own lunch and take lots of healthy snacks! Have a great week and I hope you all had a blessed Mother's Day!
